Album Review: Ängie Debuts With Suicidal Since 1995
Sweden’s Ängie’s Suicidal Since 1995 might be the dopest, sardonic debut to be released this week. Technically, we start dying the minute we are born. Every minute is one closer to end, and farther from the beginning, which is why you need to think about how you live in the present
Ängie carefully crafts her dark R&B sound to make sadism seem sultry. From “Here For My Habits” to “Cocaine Brain” she goes for the seductiveness of mistakes and the false, but “fantastical” version of being present. “Going wild” in your life can be a double-edge sword/ term. On one hand, it could mean going on self-destruct and, on the other, it could signify building yourself up at all costs. The point is when Ängie says, “Take A Risk!” do you think go buck wild at a party and pray nobody has a recording, or do you think go for that dream you have been ignoring for some time. What does either say about where you are at in your life?
Ängie – Here For My Habits (Audio)
“Dope”, “2013”, and “Venus In Fur” feel like the opening doors of Heaven’s naughtiest nightclub. Ängie smooths her tracks with a trap base that boings like a trampoline meant for you to lightly play upon. She carries that “chill”, atmospheric effect that makes you feel both energized and relaxed, all at once; you simply lie on the club couch and remain alert to the sparklers and hookups surrounding you. In vocality, Ängie’s has a sweet, drifting gush to her notes; like a waterfall of juice tiding over tracks to make sure that your mind stays flowing with sugar rushes. This capacity makes her seem like a modernized psychedelic.
Ängie – Dope
When you think of psychedelia, you certainly do not think cool trap stylings, nor a songstress with an R&B vocality that reflects the angelic, but rebelled innocence of early classic R&B/ 60’s pop songstresses. Yet, psychedelic means a mind-trip or a hallucinogenic, music experience. Ängie certainly gives you this with a supple voice and backdrop that heats up imaginations and slowly scorches soundscapes.
