Album Review: Mondo Cozmo Makes One Of The Best Debuts In “Plastic Soul”

Mondo Cozmo has a a way of connecting self-destruction with the, at times, overwhelming need to dream. We all have visions in our head that we use either ignite or cloud the realities before us. In Mondo Cozy’s debut “Plastic Soul” he shows the line between what a man can see for himself, and what he can hallucinate.
Mondo Cozmo – Shine

Plastic Soul begins epically strong with its title track of the same name. Cozmo’s voice seems smoked with pain and sauced with pleasure. He repeats over cosmic horns and starry keys, “Whenever I thing of her” as if the woman of his dreams is just a lightyear away, and, if he tries hard, he might get to meet her. This notion of the “best of life” being galaxies from his grasp plays into songs “Angel” and “Chemical Dream”. Even by title, you can tell that Cozmo can never shake the darkness too far from his light. He emanates his notes as if they are climbing from the pit of his soul, and asking everyone passing by to look at them. Synths and darke basslines are placed to add a sense of mysticism to further Cozy’s desire for mindfulness. HE paints himself as a man that would swim into a every blackhole in hopes that one of them contains a little light. Obviously, it has been said that you have to go through the bad to get good, and Plastic Soul, sonically, makes this truth sound like an opus/ adventure. Each song sound like a rock-gospel arranged to turn instruments like, guitars, into universes, which is why Plastic Soul is one of the best debuts of 2017.
Mondo Cozmo – Higher

From “11 Acre” to “Thunder”, Cozmo displays bitterness as an odd friend to sweetness. They both need each other because, on earth, they cannot escape the other, which is why, again, Cozmo never distances hope from hopelessness because they lead into the other. Songs like “Shine”, “Higher”, and “Come With Me” are like open wounds in which Cozmo’s lyrical honesty pours in like medicine. Thus, I cannot emphasize how beautifully his vocal vulnerability meets with the emotional facts of his verses. Getting better in every way is a universal journey that can last lifetimes, and Plastic Soul is a music reminder of this.
