Album Review: Adeline’s (ad_uh_leen) Is My Album of The Week

I can literally sum up my reaction to this exceptional, solo debut in this giphy:

WOW! Did I jam to the pure vibe that is Adeline’s (ad_uh_leen). This woman feels like Solange Knowles had a baby with Prince. Imagine purple cranes in the sky flying over you! This album is avant-garde retro. Churning smooth, buttery blends of 80’s synths and snares and spreading them over an artful bread. Yes, this record is completely edible, but , more importantly, it distinguishes Adeline from Escort.

When you are apart of a band as followed and beloved as Escort, branching away could seem contrite to outsiders. To them, Adeline is Escort, and any attempt to replicate or distinguish from the cosmic, funkiness of this group would fall flat. After all, do you really need more if you already have good? Well…… you could always get more “good”! Adeline gets “good” by making songs such “Illusions,” “Work of Art,” and “Magic” pastel over you as if you are celebrating Holi, and the softest colors are being tossed upon your supple skin.

If Escort is a groove then Adeline, alone, is a frequency. Her album symbolizes that she does not want you to, solely, have a higher feeling; she wants you to hav higher thoughts. From “Emeralds” to “No Name,” Adeline brushes philosophy into her lyrics like the Nietzsche of R&B beguiling and electro-romanticism. She turns empowering verses that ask you to own you right to choose into prompts on why you do not. Thus, “Hi-Life,” “Cafe Au Lait,” and “Echo” are not just visual in rhythm but visionary in soulfulness. While you can vogue and sashay to how every base and beat presses behind Adeline, her voice and message are buttoned into your heart.

Adeline can SANG! She can belt out a note with the passion of a victory cry, but, in (ad_uh_leen), her voice seems plotted and delicately planned like, a drawing you must decide on which colors to fill it with. It is an incredible turn that shows for her solo endeavor she wishes to be meticulous in the calm she provides. As Escort, she ignited a crowd, but as Adeline she soothes it.
