Albums of 2018 : Adrianne Lenker Throws You An Abysskiss On Tour
While, in life, people say, “Go Big or Go Home,” we often find that it is when we simplify or go small that we reap the greater rewards. Journeys will always outweigh destinations because they define how we become a person, while a “place/ state of being” is just result of who we’ve become. In Adrianne Lenker’s new album, abysskiss, is the destination of a woman who has heavily documented her journeys.
Lenker is a KNOWN songwriter, and, as frontwoman of Big Thief, she has stolen people’s hearts. Yet, abysskiss, is about how her heart has been taken by her own life. She is the FRONTWOMAN OF A SUCCESSFUL BAND! Frankly, there is nothing like “success” to make you question happiness. It is as if life has taken all of your “reasons” to be sad, and taught you that it is your behavior making you unhappy: not your situations. Still, Lenker uses tracks like, “Terminal Paradise,” “Womb,” and “What Can You Say” to analyze how her heart reacts to her surrounding persons and pastures. The result is an album that daringly intimate.
I firmly believe music is more about mood than sound. It is about how your soul reacts to what you are listening to more than your body. Lenker creates melodies that makes your soul quiet, pensive, and humbly mindful. Her voice rolls in wonder; as if she sings by a seat near the window on life’s train. You imagine her pulling out a guitar, and lulling verses as clouds pass her by with images of her relationships past and choices made. Her ability to capture every moment when we allowed our hearts to settle into an instance is magical. Thus, abyss kiss becomes proof that simplicity goes a long way in building your sound’s depth.
