Album Review: Myke Bogan Throws A “Pool Party” And I Am Going!

Myke Bogan is throwing a Pool Party of sound, and you are all invited. On August 18, his album, Pool Party, will be released, and the rising Portland rapper is dedicating this career milestone to the change of career he mulled over. Myke played D1 college football at the University of South Dakota, and though rising in the sport, music became a greater love. Leaving what you know for what you feel is not an easy course, and, though Pool Party is fun in vibes and sound, it can dive into the swimming changes of life’s path.

The LP can range from “bounce tracks”, which are song made to blast at the party, and electro-experimentation, which are songs you listen to for a psychedelic experience. In songs like, “AAA” and “Gravy”, soul and Hip Hop commiserate over the lax flow of Bogan’s rap style. To use his football history, Bogan runs through fields of verses with an effervescent agility, and scores emotional touchdowns every-time. He goes straight for the goal of making you understand what it is to fall in love with a new dream, and then have to figure out if it loves you back. While he has the tracks about loving another person, “Take The Nite Off”, what makes Pool Party shine is his discussion of falling for the dreams and ideas in your head, and trying to decipher if you are protecting something that can actually be a reality . His search for inner peace with his imagined loves/ dreams shines through sonically explorative tracks like, “Suun”, “Far Away”, and “Elevators Above”. Through subtlety, Make Bogan strains and whips noises to  make songs meet new-wave with Hip Hop. “Sailor Jerry” is, probably, my favorite track and staple song for Bogan’s ability to deliver hope over a distinctive and attractive R&B/ electro infused soundscape.

I, sincerely, love Bogan’s flow, and feel that a Pool Party is very emblematic of his style. For one, it is a place where people convene under sun and conversation for joy. Moreover, like his instrumentals people swim in glee and uses colorful floats in the same way that Bogan uses bright and intriguing synths and chords. Yet, most importantly, a Pool Party is where, at times, we have our most heartfelt or deepest revelations. Yes, that sounds humorous, but who has not had a philosophy discussion with friends over beers & the BBQ? Who has not told a loving friend or family member an important thought, feeling, or news at a social gathering? When we gather for fun, we also end up gathering for foundational moments to our humanity; where we are left to see what defines us and the people/ ideas we love. Hence, Myke Bogan’s Pool Party lives up to its name. He is here to have a good time, but he also here to see what good means to him.
