Concert Review: Welshly Arms Cause A Revival At Rockwood Music Hall

Welshly Arms might as well have brought a Church Revival to Rockwood Music Hall. As they played the spirit-rising rock n’ roll, “Praise!” became the ultimate word in my head. This band is unabashedly about true rock; where a soul and a guitar become one to string along music like a wild- child on the loose.

My gushing of this band begins with lead singer Sam Getz. When I go to a performance, I am analyzing the performer, and he is someone to watch and take notes. He divides his approach to the microphone by two styles. The first is conversational; where he closes his eyes and caresses the mic like, he wishes to have a serious discussion. When we talk to someone about a dire issue, especially in terms of our relationship, we begin quiet and calculated. Then, a word leads to an emotional misstep, and we writhe in feelings, only to end the convo in either wisdom or whimpers. The same goes for how Getz treats ; the first verse is quiet, the chorus is an uproar, and the final verse is either the emotional backlash or breakthrough he comes to receive. His second style is what I call “The Preacher”. In this, her roars his lyrics with ferocity that is comparable to a lion. His voice is like gravel and gold were shoveled together in his treasury-vocal box, which helps him get into the wealth of soil in his verses. Welshly Arms sings to the riotous and revealing moments of our life where we reach turning point in who we are as persons, which is why their show had such a rejuvenating vibe. When Getz jolts his body and swings his head it is like the Holy Spirit is coming down, and Bri Bryant is the angel of its beckoning. As she belts and billows with a voice that shows grace is a force, the crowd could do nothing but feel thankful. Now more than ever we need bands to rise that make us feel arisen. Welshly Arms is one of those bands, and their upcoming EP, Legendary, is one to rise and get.

Playing from their upcoming EP, tracks like “Bad Blood” and “Legendary”, their tracks could bring out the inner Wonder Woman and Superman of any woman and man. They go for epics rather than tracks, and no song was left without a few seconds of riffing instrumentals that felt like spiritual battle cries. These instances reminded me of classic rock intermissions; where instruments were allowed to speak their hearts as much as vocalists. Yet, most importantly, their lyrics are about when confronting life, your soul can either cower or stand up to fear, and Welshly Arms’ music, especially for their Legendary EP, is all about rising to the occasions and gauntlets life throws at you.
