Album Review: Basia Bulat Asks “Are You In Love?”
Basia Bulat’s voice captivates in “Are You In Love?” There is an inherent “pleading” quality to her vocality that her makes her notes emotes like plights to understand if this world FEELS like she does. It is a powerful, yet casual gift that makes the album, to be released on March 27, feel like a welcome to any collection because, frankly, I am asking, myself, what everyone feels….. if they feel love?

In these crazy times, it is good to have a voice that makes you feel; to hear songs that not only make your rise in your dreams but also sing into your feelings. From “Hall of Mirrors” to “Your Girl,” Basia feels like Sandy from Grease….. is she didn’t end up with Danny! I know, BLASPHEMY! Yet, imagine that! Imagine your favorite love stories where the leading woman didn’t get the guy and became the perfect gal to the perfect gent! When we fall in love, it is so hard not to graze over your lover’s flaws and make them idyllic because their strengths have impressed you so. Yet, people are people, which means time weathers us and even the one you love can end up not loving you. YIKES!

The magic of “Are You In Love?” is that it takes a cinematic feel and simplifies it through, again, Basia’s distinct, sweet voice. Going off my “Sandy” notion, she feels like the lead in a classic, romantic film, but, this time, we see the epilogue. We, the listener, find out that the movie’s happy, wedding scene may have been the final clip for us, but it was the start of her. Thus, songs such as, “Electric Rose” and “Fables” have an immersive, narrative feel that sweeps the through listeners to make “Are You In Love” feel like a visual experience as much as a virtuous one.
