Album Review: Beach Fossils “Somersault” Is A Stringed Dream To Your Ears
Beach Fossils new album, Somersault, does exactly that upon your heart and mind. Picking upon classic 70’s, 60’s folk-pop, the album brews a sense of childhood nostalgia. Each track feels like a sweet picture of you, your family, and your friends smiling as if life never left the bliss of that framed moment.

This album is 100% dreamy and mesmerizing in instrumentals. The band has completely reinvented itself to draw in a shimmering psychedelia to their sounds. Tracks like, “Closer Everywhere” and “Social Jetlag” stand out as my FAVES. Their string arrangements of piano, harpsichord, and flute add a sweet humility to Beach Fossils lyrics that often approach themes like confusion, euphoria, loneliness, and every emotional extreme that confounds us in its expression. Thus, their songs ability to wrap listeners in their darkness and lightness is riveting. You let go of the sad or happy foundations that construct tracks like, “Be Nothing” and “ Sugar” just to feel wrapped in the sonic and vocal warmth of lead singer, Dustin Payseur. Like the effervescent flows of the rhythms behind him, Payseur merely wants to breeze into listeners’ day. He is simply easy to listen, which might be an unusual or rare compliment , but his voice is so simple and pleasurable that it does not need flashy applause. Frankly, the whole album is the antithesis of “flash” by aiming for a soundscape that grows from the earth into your spirit’s sky.
Beach Fossils – Saint Ivy (Official Video)
I wish I could put into more proper or convincing words how much I love this album. In 11 tracks, it rejuvenates you to look outside the window, and wonder and admire the world to songs like “Down The Line” or “Saint Ivy”, which make you feel cleansed. It is as if Beach Fossils has been re-born brighter and wiser to give the world music to rest upon. While many great albums this week aim to turn on your energy, Somersault, is all about releasing it and reveling in a moment of stringed calm.
