Album Review: Beiju Shows The Music Of “Demain” Is Fantasy Pop
Raised in the outskirts of Paris, Caitlin Seager was heavily influenced by contemporary jazz and the avant-garde art world as a child before moving to New York City at 18. Growing as a musicians in the Brookly DIY scene, she debuted as a producer to experiment with the funk and house music that resonated with her from her youth. Demain is Beiju twistingly euphoric EP that uses strange synths and fuzzed chords to invite you into a world of sound.
Demain feels like a nightclub in Fairytale Land. You can hear fairies flap their wings in the gusted synths of “Movin On” or the jeweled rhythms of a Lost Queen’s crown in “Lifted”. In some ways, her mesh of house and funk has created a new genre called Fantasy Pop. In it, you can twirl for hours like were a golden top spinning according to the turns of Angel. From “Don’t Know” to “Come My Way”, Beiju arranges her music to sound both blissful and mystically mischievous. Yet, the playfulness and frolic of her rhythms are spurred by lyrics that elaborate the danger of curiosity. Beiju sings her songs as if she is a young princess asking herself, “Should I eat the apple or not?”. Of course, you might yell, “No!”, recalling Snow White’s narcoleptic curse, but she had to fall asleep to be awakened by love. Thus, Demain is a celebration of a very youthful challenge; “To take the risk or not?”. Hence, it makes sense that she would set up her sounds like they were dreamed pages of a storybook falling from the sky unto listening bystanders’ hands. You simply catch the notes and vocals of a singer who scales her register like she were going through a magical ordeal, of which you will want to join her.
