Album Review: Cat Power Feels Found As A “Wanderer”
You ever feel like you are walking to nowhere; as if you are running around for nothing or killing yourself to achieve a reward that no one told you you would get or even gave you a description. Cat Power’s Wanderer may sound and feel like a trek through a starry desert, but such an image is reflective of humanity’s search for purpose.
Vocally, Cat Power is untouchable. She lightly heavies her voice the like a dark lullaby or fable filled with warning. We have all heard childhood legends; warning kids to be morally better or expect material worse like, Santa leaving coal. Lyrically, tracks like, “Robbin Hood,” “Black,” and “You Get” appeal to this notion. Her voice drapes over you like a black, wool blanket; warming you with it darkness. Yet, that is why we love Cat Power; her voice carries a natural, gorgeous melancholy.

From “Me Voy” to “Woman (feat. Lana Del Rey),” every song drips, grains, and dusts like the sullen sands of a “wandering desert.” Cat Power annunciates her verses as if she is discovering them as she is saying them, which includes you in such a discovery. Claiming that Wanderer is about her life’s journey until this point, you grow to admire Cat Power because she has always been smart and strong. Not knowing your purpose or the reasoning behind certain events or people in your life does not make you dumb. If there is one thing that rings true to life is that, many times, meaning comes after a moment. Hence, Wanderer is not about nostalgia as much as taking notice on how life can be like a batch of threads being sewn together until they make “something” to cover you.

In time, maybe you will feel like your life is gorgeous gown you can put on a simple coat you can rock for the fall. Either way, your life should be something that “covers” you, and explains how the “skin”/ sentiments you wear became woven. With acoustic melodies, hooks, and choruses that wind through emotion, Cat Power’s Wanderer is like a fresh breeze of thought.
