Album Review: Cheo Nos Da Una Buena Sorpresa
Cheo’s Sorpresa is a surprise to the ears because it unlike many of the albums, currently, being released, which is GREAT! Now more than ever, people are looking for new. They not only want new music from old artists but new artists PERIOD! After all, I can only listen to J. Balvin’s Colores so MUCH before I feel like an Arcoiris. Yet, in a world that feels quieted, Cheo makes music that shows quieting down can be vibrant.
Music is like a key to your mind’s door, and it does not need much, if not only itself, to open you. Cheo arranges his chords to transport you to a sandy beach, where you are looking at the ocean, and remembering THE WORLD IS BIG! Of course, with Coronavirus, people are realizing that the globe is both massive and deeply inter-connected. Yet, when you look at nature, that massiveness and interconnectedness is humbling. You could look at a sea of blue and really think, “God is real!” Cheo makes music for those magical, humbling moments where you see being human is a cosmic experience.
There is a mystical vibe to each song that is rhythmically infectious: a Bossa Nova frequency to “Juega Conmigo” and “Carnaval,” a bolero feel to “Todo El Sia En La Cama,” and a funky, two-step in “Faltabas Tu” and “Trasnocho Entre Semana.”As he scopes various genres that have dominated through Latin America, you cannot help but soak up this album like the sun and even dance like you are under it.
