Album Review: Christine And The Queens Present The Life of “Chris”
Christine And The Queens is taking over the world or, at least, my life, with new album, Chris. With an English and French version, my heart is stunned on how no linguistic difference can deter the richness of Héloïse Letissier’s voice: NO MATTER WHAT SHE SAYS. Luckily, she does say a lot.
Chris is Christine And The Queens’ new alter ego, and she is dedicated to bringing him to life. Yet, he conceptually follows her consistent representation of the outcast. Every song draws on an element of alienation, as if Christine And The Queens/ Chris is on society’s outskirts: watching how it motions to maneuver its emotions. “5 Dollars,” “Doesn’t Matter,” “The Stranger,” and “Make Some Sense” are all tracks that, in an odd way, ask you to embrace your isolation. After all, Kings and Queens are, technically, loners of society; living separated from it so as to lord over it. For Chris, he is a King, and how people treat their desires like shadings upon their soul is where he finds his power; taking on the feat of being their liberator.

Sonically, from “Goya Soda” to “Feel So Good,” Chris feels like an extension of Chaleur Humaine. It spear-heads art-pop as if rhythms can paint endless landscapes. You can see watercolored fields, satin and glossed galaxies, and faces brushed with colorful oils to make their true visage blurred. Christina And The Queens uses her building voice to transform the human spirit into a myth; turning Chris into a keeper of hearts/creatures. Yet, to be called a “creature” is not an insult. We all are creatures, and Christine And The Queens molds her sound to bond body and soul through the vastness of our movements. From divinity to animalistic, Chris heightens the level from which this artist uniquely observes humanity.
Christine and the Queens – Doesn’t matter (Official Music Video)
In recent years, music has extended from solely discussing inter-love to now highlighting the need for self-love. Christine And The Queens has used that in her platform, but she is not simply stepping up to the term as much as extending it. Chris is another fearless display that pop music is not just a soundtrack to our love lives but also a guide for it.
