Album Review: Elis Noa Asks What Do You Desire?

Elis Noa is a combination of ethereal and R&B. Made of duo, Elisa Godino and Aaron Hader, their love songs are as if Heaven/ Aaron were coordinating the rhythm section, and Elisa’s voice is certainly built from the clouds. She billows like a fog over a soundscape, while her lyrics walk through the fog to ask a question a LOT of people are asking right now, “What Do You Desire?”

This pandemic has pushed a lot of people into a life crisis; with some having the capacity and creativity to reinvent themselves while others can barely carry their broken hearts. Yet, both sides have something in common, they are the results of what happens when your desires are challenged, changed, or collapsed. More than ever, people are seeing what they want, whether it is in realizing they are not going to get it or saying, “F**K IT! I’m going for it! I’ve got nothing to lose!” For Elis Noa, this dynamic is at the heart of all our choices: from the dreams we deny to the lovers we accept. From “Love Letter” to “Try To Catch Me,” Elis Noa’s songs are freeing. Elisa flits and flutters her voice as Aaron’s sounds hit smoky, rhythm & blues stride. Yet, again, the core philosophy of this record can’t be denied because it is its charm. “What do you want? Do you want me?” I can genuinely say that every person who has ever lived has asked these questions, at least once, but very few of them has Elisa’s distinct vocality.  Her voice feels textured yet simple like, red silk; for all that it symbolizes romance, at its core, it is a soft, effortless fabric. For Elisa, singing comes with the same idea; the easier you make your vocal approach, the more you lyrics can symbolize.
