Album Review: Elle King Will “Shake The Spirit” of Love Within You

Elle King’s voice could summon spirits. Honestly, she could lead American Horror Story: Coven with that vocality, and Shake The Spirit is her most confident album in her “power.” This woman’s voice feels like a literal heartbeat, but she does not pump beats as much as the blood of a relationship.

For Elle King, romance makes you a lover and a fighter. You have to fight for love, especially when passions run as high as in tracks such as “Baby Outlaw,” “Ram Jam,” and “Runaway.” Sonically, the album makes love feel like you are pulling a heist; it as if you have to steal a heart like a diamond necklace because, otherwise, you would never afford it. The image is a weirdly accurate one when you think of how many times love comes by surprise, and is delivered by “the one” you never dreamed of. In a way, “the one” truly steals your heart because you were paying the wrong people to have a relationship with.

As guitars and drumrolls race and run like cars down a dirt road, Elle King becomes the voice in your head steering your courtships. “Little Bit of Lovin,” “Told You So,” and “Shame” has Elle singing as if her thoughts are boulders rolling down an emotional mountain. Yet, what intoxicates about Shake The Spirit is that the record shows feeling is not debilitating or avoidable. You don’t have to crumble when you are breaking down or cry and fawn when your desires are unfulfilled. Instead, you have to fight and figure out how to make what you have what you love or make what you love what you have.
Elle King – Shame (Live) | Vevo Official Performance

As an album, Shake The Spirit is folk uproar mixed in with a gritty, grunge rock journey through the countryside. Yet, sometimes, you need to feel that “road trip, Bonnie & Clyde” danger, in order to see how you put your heart in harm’s way. Elle King razors her voice as if it tensely balancing on the edge, and, when you are trying to see whether your heart is in the right hands, this is a proper sentiment. Hence, Shake The Spirit set a double meaning/ambiance. On one hand, the record makes you want to rise up like your are witnessing Love’s Baptism. On the other hand, it makes you want to shred and shed the ego bits of your soul that block you from purifying your relationship choices.
