Album Review: Field Medic Is The “Floral Prince” of Honesty
When the s**t hits the fan, if you don’t have a sense of center, when the storm calms, you will feel like you let so much of your darkness out that the rainbow, coming afterwards, still looks grey. For Field Medic, he observes why we, as people, emotionally sink with our bad situations, especially in terms of age. To him, being older seems defined by being less emotional. Children admit and show their pain, but a “true adult” knows how to “handle it”, and, in Floral Prince, he admits he doesn’t.
field medic – older now (it hurts)
Personally, I feel like the pandemic has made me really absorb a song’s power even more. Hence, Field Medic’s Floral Prince struck me with its sweet potency. It felt so clear about feeling blurred. From “HEADCASE” to “Older Now (It Hurts),” he approaches songs with such softness, poesy, and honest wit that songwriters wish they could be as raw and as catchy. He shares his utmost, saddest thoughts with a brisk lightness, which is not easy when you are bringing up topics such as, mental health, addiction, and the many we sabotage our selves and our joy.
When I think of my life in my twenties, being an adult has been a perplexing, lonely, yet dazzling experience; filled with highs and lows that, many times, happened all at once or right next to each other. “better way” and “TRANQUILIZED” are standout tracks for Field Medic in embracing the confusion of feeling so much that you feel both numb and old. In a way, he is alluding to a real truth: adults are just grown children. He presumed growing up and growing old are one of the same. Field Medic captures this heavy truth with such simplicity: simple guitar melodies, easy hooks, and deeply enriched lyrics on being a not so young adult.
field medic – “i will not mourn who i was that has gone away” (official audio)
Vocally, Field Medic warms you like a cup of tea, but you only can drink it on certain afternoons. There is an oddly gorgeous fragility to his voice that helps solidify him as a speaker on the strength you find as you overcome self-destruction. This album is for the times when you want to embrace the grey of your life as if it was a rainbow. Field Medic’s Floral Prince Comes Out October 2 Click Here.
