Album Review: Flatbush Zombies Show Fame Can Be A Vacation In Hell
Flatbush Zombies’ Vacation In Hell is a sonic celebration of one of the most distinct, Hip Hop acts in the game. From trap-bangers to simmering slow jams, Flatbush Zombies have garnered a fan-base that admires how they place their lunacy into genius. Yet, fame comes with a price, and Vacation In Hell shows it can be a fun, lonely paradise.
I can’t imagine what it must be like to have a mass of people praise you as a trend-setting voice. Do you fear losing it? Do you try to grow it? Do you try to keep it the same? While Vacation In Hell, has its ready-made club tracks like “Chunky” or “HELL-O” or songs that will be blasted by every car driving up my block to make sure my room quakes with sonic vibrations like “Big Shrimp” and “Facts ft. Jadakiss”, it also contains a undercutting question; is the grass greener? Beneath beats that make classic Hip Hop soundscapes, such as “Headstone” and “Best American”, feel refreshed and futuristic with psychedelic undertones, lie trippy verses that ponder how long paradise, i.e. creative innovation, can be held.
FLATBUSH ZOMBiES – VACATION (The-Movie)
Part of Flatbush Zombies’ success is that they embody the coolness of being an “outcast”. Success is lonely, and requires a person to rise on their own to make their creativity into a movement. Meechy Darko, Erick Arc Elliott, and Zombie Juice flow like three separate frequencies measuring the range, depth, and intensity of being cultural earthquakes. There is NO OTHER Hip Hop act like them in sound, style, and capacity to convert a verse into a fashion statement. Even their lyrics drape like fine furs and avant-garde suits waltzing down the runways/ songs of “Crown ft. Portugal The Man”, “The Glory ft. Denzel Curry”, and “The Goddess ft. Dave”.
FLATBUSH ZOMBiES – ‘HEADSTONE’
Having features of fellow fresh, eccentric artists, “U & I ft Dia” or “Reel Girls ft. Bun B”, does not take away the power of their “stand-alones” such as, “Trapped”, “YouAreMySunshine”, and “Ask Courtney”. Yet, their features come off like honor badges for their ability to share explorations into power, love, money, and the excesses of all through a colorful palette. It is easy to miss Flatbush Zombies’ richer insights and wealth of rap rejuvenation because, again, they feel too cool to be thoughtful, but that is why have such a cult following. They have veiled thinking into their hypnotic beats and flows, and warn listeners that a vacation in hell (fame) will only make you wonder, even more, what is Heaven (happiness)?
