Album Review: Girl Friday Confront A “Fashion Conman”

Girl Friday think of themselves as an explicitly feminist project; using their music to raise awareness on gender issues and imagination on how to resolve them. In essence, they celebrate womanhood as much as they defend it, of which their new record, Fashion Conman, does exactly that.

“Headstones,” “Lullaby No. 13,” “Generation Sick, and ”Decoration/Currency” confront the many levels of oppressions people face. From “classism” to “sexism,” there is always a system to keep a person chained, but the question is whether you are willing to free yourself. In essence, anyone can bring you down, but how do you lift yourself up? The latter questions is hard to figure, and it permeates throughout each song. Girl Friday – “Decoration/Currency” [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Vera Ellen,Libby Hsieh, Sierra Scott, and Virginia Pettis interchange and combine vocals to feel like a singular person. While the band is open how they are major personalities eager to build a big presence, their songs feel balanced. It is if they have infused calm with their colorfulness, which fleshes out the motive of their music. If the world wants you to hide your personality, then it is time to fight for your humanity. Thus, their mod-pop style surfs through to make you feel like, beneath the arrangements, are person’s life fused into a “Bangles-like” rhythm.
