Album Review: Gordi Makes Her Heart A “Reservoir” As She Sings To Loss
Gordi’s music has always aimed for being “off”. That is the term every human uses to describe when he or she feels like life is not hitting the proper marks/ points it is supposed to or, for however “okay” everything is, you still feel it is not right. Gordi sonically and spiritually lives in the “off”, and her debut album, Reservoir, is aptly tilted for the times we reserve our senses even in the face of senseless situations.

Loss seems to ruminate throughout Reservoir because what situation leaves us more “out of place” than the loss of a relationship. Yet, for Gordi, it is not just about losing a lover; it is about growing apart or away from the people you once thought you could not live without. “Long Way”, “Heaven I Know”, and “Can We Work It Out” feel like needles to the heart with how lyrically detailed Gordi is in describing a relationship’s slow fade.Sometimes, in relationships, laughs leave, common ground breaks, and shared ideas become separated. Yet, the end of a relationship is not always big and dramatic; it is also silent and simple in how it wanes, which can make it more tragic. Suddenly, calls become less and “hangouts” turn into rarities as you watch someone once so meaningful to your life become a stranger. What I love about Reservoir is that it shows grievance as a daily friend to replace the one you loss, and Gordi’s toned vocals are perfect to show that loss is an emotionally waved process. In songs like, “Aeon” and “Bitter End”, Gordi appears like a tenor; deepening her voice in the baritones of youthful confusion and fleeting love. Yet, in songs such as, “On My Side” and “Something Like This” her voice brightens like the sun meeting wind, and lightly whips through lyrics as if hope has personally revived her heart. There a re moments when, I swear, you can hear when Gordi has said goodbye to someone she knew and welcomed someone new. If anything, Reservoir should be called Revolving Door as it strikes for the grief/glee that comes with the many faces you will call friends and how, eventually, you will call them strangers again. It is a fascinating note to humanity that sheeted between indie-pop and electro-folk.

Let’s be honest; nowadays you will not find an album that has not been touched by a digitized beat or analog rhythm. Yet, Gordi artfully places acoustics with synths to make even the most electric machination feel bare. Every sound in this album feels stripped of its original power/ prowess to be heard according to its sentimental core. For me, and Gordi, every sound has a heartbeat that goes beyond words but strikes for a felt essence like, the way a siren automatically means panic and a laugh always means joy. Thus, Reservoir is sonically a course in how to make music emanate loss but produce bliss. For however, sad or hopeless Gordi may feel, as Better Than Then, Closer To Now, you feel she has enough sensical reservation to know she HAS to move forward.
