Album Review: Gorillaz Are In “The Now Now”

Just when you think Gorillaz cannot get any stranger, they release The Now Now. Well, to be fair, Gorillaz have always been unique, but The Now Now feels like a set of doors rather than tracks. Each one opens you up to locations that feel like a warped, but picturesque soundscape on Earth.

Imagine going to “Idaho” or “Lake Zurich” to see its open fields, and finding them melting like a technicolor, water painting. Sonically, that is how The Now Now feels creates its ambiance. From “Hollywood” to “Magic City,” these sparkling names carry some weighty beats that make everything bright seem “off”; as if their rhythms were set lights placed in sporadic arrangements. The result is album that is mystical and mysterious in how its leads you to the dance-floor.
Gorillaz – Humility (Official Video)

If this album is a twisted fantasy, then 2-D’s vocals play off like a protagonist trying to find his way back home to “Kansas.” His voice feels like steps planting into varying soils/ virtual playgrounds to find some stability. With each step, he moves through Gorillaz natural blends of funk, disco,Hip Hop, and classical inspired instrumentals to continue on his search for inner stability. If that is not the most “Now Now” things to be doing then I do not know what is! Everyone trying to feel secure, and Gorillaz record shows music might be the only thing to make you feel solid.
Gorillaz – Hollywood feat. Snoop Dogg & Jamie Principle (Visualiser)

The Now Now feels like Gorillaz’s biggest settlement into their natural experimentation. This group/ band of cartoons were innovators, and have becomes guides to a music scene that lauds experimentation versus its years of diminishing such “crazy” ideas. Thus, their new albums, oddly enough, feel present in this music scene. For More Information On Gorillaz and To Buy The Now Now Click Here.
