Album Review: H.E.R. Volume 2 Builds An R&B Bridge Between Love And Lust

H.E.R may hide her face for pictures, but she, certainly, cannot hide her heart. This songstress is a complete throwback to intentions old-school R&B; make you lust for your partner. Love and lust, often, can be too interchangeable, but they do need to have a connection, and H.E.R. Volume 2, H.E.R makes sure the bridge between them is solid.
H.E.R. – Say It Again (Audio)

First, let me lather in H.E.R’s smooth, cleansing vocals. She runs through tracks “Every Kind Of Way” and “Lights On” like soap; washing and moisturizing the skin you wear before your lover. For me, H.E.R. is using her higher register, her vocals exude an angelic quality that contrasts beautifully with slow, low basslines. It is as if something heavenly has come down to the earth, which love and passion can feel like. There are, definitely, some Teddy Pendergrass’ messages of “Turn off the lights/ And light a candle”, when you hear “Say It Again” and “Changes”. She sparks the eagerness to simply be with the one you want. At times, you cannot explain, and, maybe, do not need to elaborate why you want who you want. For H.E.R, her vocals rest on her emotions like one would over a cool blanket. She is subtle in a every sentimental height and plateau, which only furthers my “angel” image. Still, not every bit of wanting someone is easy to which, “Still Down” , “Gone Away”, and “I Won’t”, lyrically, places H.E.R. in every position of desire you can have for your partner. From confirming your loyalty to furthering your love as compensation for the lack of theirs, or settling in to the fact that you cannot love them like they want you to, the irony of life is that, for however much pain we are caused, we also cause it. H.E.R vocally oozes that suffering is a part of sentiment because you cannot feel love without feeling pain. Part of giving yourself to someone is accepting that everything is temporary; to lose him or her is a given but to gain him or her is a undeniable luxury.
H.E.R. – Every Kind Of Way: A Short Film Inspired By Music From H.E.R.

Instrumentally, H.E.R. 8 track album is as smooth at her voice. She deserves to be blasted in every bedroom and car-ride as a sonic symbol that you are doing well with your life. Every beat is like pat of your soul to rest, and let music de-stress your spirit, which, again, is what R&B was made for. No matter what, “modernization” or “electro fusion” she adds, the point is that desiring someone can be anxious/ glorious ordeal in reality, but, musically, as in H.E.R Volume 2, it has to be a dreamy one.
