Album Review: Half Waif Will Be The Caretaker

I wrote about this in my Colores review, but I, actually, do believe that now is the time to release music. Here is the dilemma. Art is most consumed and created during times of great distress like, a pandemic, but concerts are a separate species, and artists, usually, follow an album with a tour: even feeling the latter is vital to making the former feel more important. Yet, WE NEED NEW MUSIC! Half Waif’s The Caretaker certainly delivers.

From “My Best Self” to “Generation,” Half Waif mourns and admires the choices we have to make to get better. The lovers we turn away, the friendships we let go, the dreams we realize will only be real to our brains, and the realties we try to make dreamier. Thus, from “Clouds Rest” to “Brace,” Half Waif’s higher tone rings like a bell, telling her fellow Millies that being a caretaker and taking care of one’s self is not mutually exclusive. Though we, often, feel like it is.

Half Waif – “Halogen 2”

As Millennials, we have higher rates of homelessness, depression, and debt, add on a global pandemic, and our generation is the youngest grouping to discover life gets old fast. Still, Half Waif’s electro soundscapes feel elegant and balanced like, she took her synthesizer to church and tried to figure out ow we can cosmically makes sense of our earthly journeys. Is the meaning of life that important to giving our life meaning? Discuss.

Half Waif – “Ordinary Talk”

Tracks like, “In August,” “Lapsing” and “Window Place” crack open hearts that feel they might not be able to give more of themselves to a world that feels emptied. YIKES! Talk a poignant, spiritual point amplified by these crazy times. Yet, if the point of music is to heal us, then Half Waif’s The Caretaker is deliver with purpose.
