Album Review: Hannah Georgas Has All That Emotion

Change is a weird thing. It is both hated and desired. It can bring so much joy or devastation; with both feeling irrevocably bound to the very idea of change. Yet, in Hannah Georgas’ All That Emotion, the acclaimed songstress explores how our relationship with change stems from our past. Our eagerness for it or unwillingness to embrace it, come from our desire to pick it apart, pluck out the things we want from it, and ignore the rest: much like how we look at the past.

Sometimes, I wonder if nostalgia is the low-key enemy of resilience and resistance. It is a rose-colored pair of glasses that makes us feel like we once were a blossoming garden but now are a stack of weeds. The problem is whether we every truly had a grasp of our self, and if our past was so glamorous why didn’t it lead to better? Hannah ask herself these questions throughout tracks like, “Cruel” or “Same Mistakes,” except she does it with a maturity that comes from accountability. She is a woman that truly wants to live better and, for that, she has to confront her worst. Thus, she redefines maturity as taking up responsibility: not simply in actions but in reactions. Life knocked you down….. but did you get up?

From “Easy” to “Pray It Away,” All That Emotion is oddly serene. It is like Hannah put feelings through filters, streams, and processor until she discovered how to make them smooth and malleable. Isn’t that the dream? That one day our feelings could actually bend rather than sharpen the more you ignore them. For Hannah, this album has brought out the truth in her voice, which is fascinating because her truth sounds peaceful. Her vocality is serene like someone floating on a river and letting its ripples caress her skin. She is acknowledging that her life’s events have affected her but you can change the affect. Thus, All That Emotion is, ultimately, an homage to self-control and comes out September 4. Click Here To Buy.
