Album Review: Hero Releases His “Dirty Work”

The Canadian EDM star, Hero, is quickly taking over the scene with his dark, catchy tunes that capture the perpetual pain of the dance scene. I always remark that “the club”/ rave scene is about escapism, but, usually, you are escaping from something you do not want like, boredom or work exhaustion. Hero understands the emotional dichotomy of electronica in making its listeners feel invincible compared to the usual vulnerability we carry in our daily lives.

Signed to Fool’s Gold, Hero might be the label’s most auspicious, new catch.  Rhythmically, he builds a darkly visual ambiance. You could see the shadows and strobe lighting that dance across warehouses where EDM events are, usually, held. You could picture the costume beading and sweat that drips off participants as they come to move as their imagined self. With this in mind, Hero sings in tracks such as, “Stay The Night” and “Dirty Work” to the neediness of companionship. You not only dance to take away your anxiety, but also to make yourself clear enough to enjoy another’s presence.

As basslines and synths press like keys on a computer, you might feel like Ryan Gosling in Drive: seedy, badass, and ready to wear a gold, scorpion jacket as you fall in love. In essence, Hero really does appeal to the “dirty work” image. You have to accept and go through the pain of living to live more, be better, and move like to his moody, disco beats. Thus, in verse and sound, it is hard to resist the emotional and motioned purge that Hero ignites. You want to dance in this virtual world he has built around people’s inner sentimental one.
