Album Review: Watsky’s Complaint Is Bonafide

Watsky’s new album, Complaint, is the perfect display of this artist’s snark and seriousness. From Bad Bunny to Father John Misty, people love an artists that is eccentric, willing to be silly, and astute enough to be in on his jokes, even if they tap into very real issues. Watsky follows suit by giving a record, out on January 11, that feels toyed with bright, colorful lingos, playful rhythms, and manual instructions on how to be a better person for fun.

Better person for fun? Yup! Love is not the only thing you need to grow up for; fun also requires a certain amount of lightheartedness earned by maturity. Tracks like, “Limos 4 Emos,” “All Like Whatever,” and ‘Whitecaps,” have Watsky tapping into the absurdity of superficiality, sentimentality, and alienation. Whether you are the most popular girl in the party or the “loser guy” in the corner, both can share a common, egotistical loneliness; the minute you think you are above or beneath the crowd is the minute you lose your connection with it. For Watsky, this is a snooze move.

With one of the album’s biggest hits, “Welcome To The Family,”  Watsky amplifies his desire for inclusivity. His message describes unity as spiritual connectivity; a universal intuition that obviously states you need to share a moment with others to live a happy memory. Thus, Watsky plants his verses like a man wiring this connection. He swerves and swindles from deep thoughts to quick puns, and exemplifies the inner genius’ capacity to let his intelligence be rich but his wit shine. Vocally, he has a voice there rolls lyrics like punches, but hands out meanings like bouquets. You duck and catch punchlines and basslines as if the club could also become a classroom, which is, exactly, what Watsky wants.

Now on his fifth album, Watksy understand his balance, which makes Complaint feel like his most confident record yet. From “”Mean Ass Drunk” to “Feel Alright,” Complaint drives club rhythms with a Mario Kart sensibility ; no matter how splashy and innocently fun the beats feel, you still need to be smart to figure how to win the message.
