Album Review: Lido Pimienta Is “Miss Colombia” Pa Que Lo Sepas!
I can’t recall how MANY articles I have read remarking on the GLOBAL LATIN EXPLOSION, but the truth is Latin Music has always been global: in power and even construction. Lido Pimienta’s Miss Colombia honors that truth. First, how she annotates her notes recalls the Arabic and indigenous influences that spread across Colombia’s history. It is hard not to hear our African roots in the folkloric patterns of her music, and feel like she is bringing a sense of futurism to Colombia’s most popular, original sounds like, Vallenato and Cumbia. The result is a record that celebrates romantic love through Colombian pride.
Lido Pimienta – Nada | A COLORS SHOW
From “Eso Que Tu Haces” to “Quiero Que Me Salves, ” Lido’s voice feels planted in earth sprouting to the sky to ask the gods to be good to this earthly woman. Ugh! I feel that. Whether you are in love with someone or in love with a dream, it hard not to feel like they live above you rather than, down here, with your because of how that love elevate them in your eyes. In this sense, Lido’s verses have sense of mythos. She repeats lyrics like mantras giving tracks like, “Nada” and “Resisto Y Ya,” a level of healing and command of good vibes. For her, this album is about summoning the right one to love you while, simultaneously, expelling all the reasons you don’t love yourself.
Lido Pimienta – “Eso Que Tu Haces”
Notice I used spiritual terms like, “summoning” and “expelling” to describe Lido’s music. It is inevitable that when you get in Latin music’s roots that there is some level of spiritualism in sound, story, vibe, and intention. If you know Latin America’s crazy history then you know we needed some prayers, but, for Lido, her voices rusts and roots to feel both refreshed and faded by that history. “Para Transcibir (Sol) y (Luna),” “Pelo Cucu,” and “No Pude” intertwine how resilience only feels good and beautiful in retrospect. It is an energy you draw upon because you keep on having to have it, but once notice it always come through, Lido’s voice like sister warrior telling you, “We are going to pull through like always!” For More Information On Lido Pimienta And To Buy Miss Colombia On April 17 Click Here.
