Album Review: Jain Confirms We Can All Be A “Souldier”

Jain is a DANCE KWEEN! Her new album, Souldier, celebrates that through dance we find resilience. Moreover, it is an expansion of an artist that used her Congolese inspirations to travel the world, and thus discover how everyone finds freedom in sound. To her, we are not different in our sufferings as much as our reactions to them but, like a “Souldier”, her spirit resists.

JAIN says about this new album: “Souldier is an album which was written on the road, crossing various countries and inspirations during its time of writing. I wanted to release it as quickly as I could, to make sure it resembled me as much as possible. Having mostly highlighted my teenage years and Congolese rumba on “Zanaka”, this time around I wanted to show a bit more of myself. The aim was to broaden my influences, both those from my childhood and my current ones. I’m a big fan of Kendrick Lamar’s flow, Tito Puente’s softness, Fairuz’ elegance and Bob Marley’s melodies.”

Such influences are felt in the bombastic symphonies of tracks like, “Flash,” “Abu Dhabi,” “Inspecta,” and “Star.” Each one, literally, encapsulates what it is to feel good through its soundscapes. You could vogue to every song in Souldier. Yet, do not get it twisted! While Jain’s record has pure bops, her lyrics dissect what it is to keep moving while trying to avoid crashing. From “Dream” to “On My Way,” Jain’s record feels more settled and concise in her debut album’s mission: to empower over power. For her, fame and money do not compare to the wealth of love, laughs, and the realization of your integrity.

Jain’s vocality and rhythms feel like fashion and culture; dressing her instrumentals in colorful garbs that carry histories of fierce fighters. From Arabic to African, Jain continues to use the world as her oyster of music, and has turned her voice into an instrument. The way she annotates her verses makes her sound like an added conga; pouncing beats to infuse with your soul a sense of unity. We can all be “Souldiers;” warriors in spirit that choose love as a tool rather than hate as a weapon. Such a mindset is more needed than ever.
