Album Review: Jessie Reyez Debuts With Absolute Power…. And Vengeance
Before Love Came To Kill Us! YAS! Even the title of Jessie Reyez’s is fabulously dramatic like the title of an old, Hollywood film where Bette Davis devours Marlon Brando for cheating on her. Absolutely every song on this record is meticulously melodramatic, while being strangely raw and honest. Why? Because when someone breaks your heart, it is dramatic. Moreover, it is traumatic.
Lyrically, Before Love Came To Kill us is devastatingly truthful as to why we feel our heartbreaks so badly….. we feel dumb. I’ll say it! I have looked back at some of my exes and felt so ashamed and stupid for loving them. Just envisioning how soft and caring I was with them just before they broke my heart makes me feel, at worst, disgusted with myself. Yet, I know I’m not alone, at least, because Jessie Reyez feels me. From “Coffin” to “Kill Us,” she sings to the destruction of her euphoria with her lover through his poor decisions to cheat and mistreat her.
Jessie Reyez – ANKLES (Lyric Video)
When love becomes hate, it is hard not remember the good times with your now-enemy, and then proceed to wish you had carried a machete during your make-out sessions. Reyez has a playful annotation with her voice. She does not just sing her lyrics, but acts out the story of them; completely capturing what it is to be a lover scorned. It sucks that someone who betrayed you was able to bring out the best of you and then the worst. Her ability to capture that pain through her voice is mesmerizing, and make you feel like you are listening to an audiobook as much a debut album. Before Love Came To Kill Us is an absolute NOVELA!
Jessie Reyez – LOVE IN THE DARK
This Colombian Queen is giving me Latinx Pride. The record is phenomenally produced, and goes beyond genres to simply embody emotions. While, of course, you will hear R&B and even rock influences, Reyes uses rhythm to make sentimental statements. Her soundscapes are solely to carry the rage, longing, sadness, vengefulness and ultimate resilience she gains at knowing that, sometimes, you need to fall for the wrong person to rise and become a better one.
