Album Review: JMSN’s “Whatever Makes U Happy” Will Make You Very Happy

JMSN Whatever Makes U Happy makes me feel drunk, and I am very happy about it. The whole album feels as if JMSN took a shot of liquid courage and wrote down every lyric, chord, and sentiment he bottles throughout his day. The emotional honesty of this album is intoxicating, and makes it one to blast when you have had ENOUGH of your partner’s lies.

Whatever Makes U Happy, similar to Mary J Blige’s Strength Of A Woman, seems like a confrontation veiled in funkadelic blues. JMSN’s voice is silky and one to wrap yourself in as you let the harmonics and smooth guitar of “Love Ain’t Enough” kiss you, or the keys of “Patiently” undress you. The irony of Whatever Makes U Happy is that it is a love letter to Love based in loneliness. Who has not had the nightly blues, and make you wish someone was there to cuddle (“Angel”) ? Or who has not felt the gulping pain of being pushed too far by your lover to the point that you cannot let their behavior “Slide”? What I love about JMSN’s album is that it is a lyrical tussle between the self-respect and relationship respect we all desire, but, again, JMSN’s voice is too wrought with the reality of this struggle. From coo’s and ahhh’s that he vocally stretches in songs in “Drinkin” or “Always Somethin”, you wonder who can hit a higher, melodic chord; his guitar or him. The way he swindles soul from the back of his vocal chords is comparable to how you would stir wine before your first taste; you look at the sentimental notes he crushed and used just to give you such a luxurious drink.

I love Whatever Makes U Happy. It is classic soul with swirls of rock, funk, and blues to make you in your feelings, which, sometimes, you need to be. Sometimes, you need to look at you desire for your love and how it works in and out of relationships.
