Album Review: Kassin Makes You Want To Relax In Brazil
I LOVE Kassin’s Relax. When ever someone brings the “Latin- Samba” heat to their sound, my soul and roots feels summoned to the dance-floor. It makes sense that the Brazilian artist infuses his music culture and aesthetics into his songs, and, Brazil, of one of the biggest countries on earth, has a wealth of inspiration to choose from.
Being big, Brazil has plenteous landscapes that can be transferred into soundscapes. You have the oceans of Rio, which seem to hit on sandy synths and bluesy baselines in “A Paisagem Morta” or “Serie O Donut”. Get into the jungles of the Amazon “Estricnina” and “Relax”. Lyrically, Kassin goes for the light-hearted; balancing serious takes on love and life with a silly approach like in “Momento De Clareza” and “Comprimidos Demais”. Yet, even this lyrics balance of satirical and sage is integral to Brazilian/ Latin American sound. After all, sometimes, you have to laugh in order not to cry.
Admittedly, I love a good disco-tropical vibe, “As Coisa Que Nos Nao Fizemo,” and Kassin’s voice breezes through all of it. He, himself, appears like a nice, gentle wind; uttering his lyrics with a fun delicacy. It is clear that he does not want Relax to be overpowering. Instead, he tries to find the exhilaration of serenity, and how a calming rhythm can pull you to the dance-floor as much as a loud or powerful one.
