Album Review: Katy Perry’s Witness Is An Outlook On Spiritual Liberation
If you have not been watching Katy Perry’s Witness Live, you are missing on some sincere, fun moments. In both her “perrified” Big Brother House and recent interviews, she has claimed Witness was about spiritual liberation. Now, it may difficult to connect spiritual liberation with Katy Perry because dancing and having a good time are not usually seen as definers of a soul’s freedom even though they make it feel free.
Katy Perry – Chained To The Rhythm (Official) ft. Skip Marley
Katy Perry is a queen of pop music. If mainstream pop were Game Of Thrones, I like to think that she would be Daenerys; bringing in fiery, dragon-sized hits to burn every dance-floor and hater in sight. For this, “Swish Swish”, “Chained To The Rhythm”, and “Bon Appetite” feel like my natural faves because they have been on repeat in every radio station. They are further notches in Ms. Perry’s belt that she is a genius at making pop hooks and melodies. She completely understands what stays on the mind and on the radio, which, again, is not associated with spiritual liberation, despite, some of our happiest, most humanly connected moments being to pop hits. Future radio hits such as, “Deja Vu”, “Hey Hey Hey”, and “Bigger Than Me” feel like the soundtracks to every midnight vogue competition that will happen in the city amongst friends. Their electro beats makes you want to sashay and pliette underneath the disco ball; as if you have found your sister in spin and shine. Yet, it is in her lyrics that Perry sneaks in her inner fight to be her authentic self, which, in other words, is that aspect of you that is most empowered in its own skin: for better or worse. Clearly, Catherine Hudson can be different even more vulnerable than the “goddess” that is Katy Perry, but could either exist without the other. We need our insecurities and securities not just because they make us human, but they also make unlimited. Our flaws our the foundations to an endless journey of being better.

Accepting that we can be both flawed and fabulous, at the same time, might be the roughest aspect to being human, and explains why we can have such emotional high highs and low lows. When we realize our strengths we want to throw a parade, but when we realize our weaknesses, we feel like we have been run over by one. “Power” , “Into Me See You”, and “Mind Maze” are sonic testaments to how we sift through emotional extremes to seek balance and acceptance; we will not always be the best, but we will not always be the worst. Thus, if life is a “Pendulum” swinging us into scenarios and relationships that show how we can be healing to the world and how we need to heal ourselves from it, “Witness” is a “popified” outlook to said truth.
