Album Review: Kidd Kenn Is Calling Out Child’s Play
I have always liked Kidd Kenn, in the same fashion I like J.I. Prince, because they remind me of my block. They have the combination of humor, heart, and hardness you need to survive and thrive in a world that will love you and cut you, all at once. From The CHI to The BX, confidence is everything; there is no room for self-doubt or self-delusion either. That balance of sass, smart, and performance ready swag dominated his NYC release show and his new mixtape.
Kidd Kenn – Child’s Play NYC Mixtape Release Party
Does Kidd Kenn have hits? Why yes, he does! “Oops,” “Real Quick,” and “Hoes and Bros” feel ready-made for house parties to house clubs. From hook to verse, each song feel like a bunch of cool, catchphrases woven into rap flows. While some may think it is insulting to have lyrics that can be transferred into Instagram captions, it is what makes the likes of Cardi B and Drake so powerful. They are rappers that write verses for memorability, and it works; most people can tell you a Drake lyric before they do an Albert Einstein quote. (Note: We can discuss the state of the world later!) My point is that Kidd Kenn is catchy and fun; creating the songs that are young, vibrant, and oddly light-hearted.
From “Did It Again” to “Money Friend,” Kenn’s music just feels like it could be on repeat. It is for the times you are chillin in the hallway with your friends acting like you “own the place” or ,the rides to the party, where you are acting like wherever you go you will own it. At the release party, literally, everyone was dancing and Kidd Kenn approached the audience with his titular “you are going to look at me style.” In a way, that is his music; an unabashed acceptance that you want attention and a bassline that makes you feel confident enough to take it.
