Concert Review: DAWN Is MY VALENTINE at Mercury Lounge

DAWN’S SHOW WAS SO FULL on Valentine’s Day that I had to wonder if we were meeting the actual saint. Adorned in red, I had seen DAWN open for Kimbra and felt mesmerized by her beauty. She sees herself and her songs like a moving work of art like, a Basquiat painting that could not keep still. She completely sums city sounds and histories into a spectacle that includes back-up dancers, out-fit changes, and a classic Burlesque vibe that would make you want to parade down New Orleans streets in skimpy lingerie and feathers. Yes…. she makes you feel bold.

Seeing DAWN as the headliner, naturally, changed her whole dynamic because SHE knew everybody was there for her. She came onto that stage like a dominatrix ready to whip and pose and people loved it, especially on St. Valentine’s Day, because she embodied sensuality and sexuality as beautiful and elegant. It is a SHOW to love to someone and a SPECTACULAR to make love with them, at least, that is how the crowd felt as she played new songs like, “Buttah” and classics like, “Renegade.” She treated her dawn like a new dawn and inkling at another one her multiple artistic reinventions. Frankly, WE ALL WERE LIVING FOR IT!
DAWN – jealousy

The way she moves, sings, and flirts with her audience made DAWN ICONIC! She is someone you go to see when you want to feel like a superhero. Hence, I kept on having two repetitious thoughts throughout her show. The first was how she shows so much force, from her being, that you think you can and should become a music superstar in the same way Star Wars made you wonder if Jedi could be a plausible career choice. My second thought was of this comedian who said, “No one ever gets work done when they listen to Beyonce.” In some ways, DAWN is the same. She pumps you up too much to let you sit at a desk and do your work because she was made for your fantasy life; the version of you that truly believes you are the literal Wonder Woman.
