Album Review: Ladi6 Brings Soul To The Future In Royal Blue 3000

I have a love/ hate relationship with electronica. I love the genre because, in essence, it is the Millennial music scene. We are a generation that grew up in and living for technology. Thus, a digitized beat feels natural, but still, not every electric music-wave is good or unique enough to be relished by my heart. Why? Because I like soul, and, it seems, Ladi6 agrees that this electro-world needs some spirit.

In her Royal Blue 3000 EP, Ladi brings blues to the distant future. Amongst beats that equate to tall, glass skyscrapers and synths that float like flying cars through city-deserts, her voice feels like flesh amongst machines. Her addition of soul to electronica is not “new” as many artists are trying to do so as we speak, but Ladi’s voice is undeniably luxurious. From “Guru” to “Beffy” the press and printing rhythms of her track smoke and roll over at the sound of her warmly radiant voice. She has such a clean, sparkling tone that she inevitably adds human nature to the computerized one of electronica. Again, though her lyrics on love and lust, “Outta Time” and “Long Way”, are not “revolutionary’ to the music scene, what makes Ladi6 so special, is that she is genuinely talented.

When you think of singers that dominate the current state of music culture, from Adele to Beyonce, their musical power comes from their talented foundation. There ability to change “the game” not only relies on their creativity, but also the fact that you love their voices. They offer a range and emotion distinct to them, no matter what backdrop, and Ladi does the same. From the minimalist sound-morphs of “So Beautiful” to the Caribbean funk flare of “Royal Blue”, her soundscape only becomes a dream one because of her vocals. She truly is a good singer, and I cannot wait to hear more. To Royal Blue 3000 On June 2  And To Learn More About Ladi6 Click Here.
