Album Review: Lion Babe Unleash a “Cosmic Wind”

You know a song is good when you are doing a “stank face,” and Lion Babe’s Cosmic Wind will make you “stank face” several times. The duo are truly making galactic bops that could easily be blasted in Venus clubhouse. Their new album feels perfect for this new era of Neo-Soul/ Funk sweeping through sound-systems.

If Ella Mai and The Internet combined to make a record, it would be Cosmic Wind. This is high praise for multiple reasons because the latter two like, Lion Babe, are indie darlings making “alternative” mainstream. They are the cusp on a new era in music that is simultaneously funkadelic and chill, which can be said about songs such as, “Never Before” and “Reminisce.” Sonically, this album is a dream with hooks and choruses repeating and bouncing as if to turn your headphones into a hypnotic device. The result is a record that makes you feel so sexy in vibes, you will dance upon immediate listen. Moreover, it turns Jillian Hervey into the voice of sensual empowerment.

Hervey has such a steady, charming vocality that it becomes sultry. She feels like rhythm itself; emanating her notes with a casual coolness that will make listeners pour into Lion Babe’s chic verses. Cosmic Wind is an exuberant record; focusing on making you feel good about your body, soul, capacity to be loved, and movement on the dance-floor. This turns Lucas Goodman’s arrangements on songs such as, “Western World,” “The Wave,” and “Sexy Time” into modern disco epics; pushing you to grooved through 2019 as if it was 1979.

Cosmic Wind has to be one of my favorite albums coming out in 2019. It is fun, vibrant, and unashamed by its celebratory status. While it is phenomenal that so many artists, especially in this era, are focused on tackling social issues and the struggles to self-love, we still need to boogie. Self-love is not only about talking to and about yourself more kindly; it is also about having fun and giving into moments. Lion Babe’s Cosmic Wind is momentous.
