Album Review: Cut Copy’s Haiku From Zero Is A Cosmic Caribbean of Sound

Haiku From Zero seems like a gorgeous title for an album sparkling with 80’s influences. This record can be best described as electric twilight; with synths seemingly waved to be as bright as the moon upon the ocean. The result is a record that redefines feel-good, and the idea of the happy dance.
Cut Copy – Airborne

When I think of happy dancing, I think of good news and bodies choreographing in celebration. Yet, Cut Copy’s Haiku From Zero makes happy dancing a sweeter note; what if you are dancing because you feel good for no reason. Yes, there are times when joy simply strikes your heart without plan or motive, and Cut Copy has managed to capsule this feeling in tracks like, “Standing In the Middle of the Field”, “Counting Down”, and “Memories We Share”. They are filled with tropical instrumentals pulsing and pacing quickly to make you feel like you are listening to electro-rumba. You just want to keep moving and smiling oblivious to anything but the feeling of euphoria brewing within you. Producer Ben Allen has seemingly mashed Michael Jackson’s stylings with Stranger Things’ mysterious glee: you feel like you are happily dancing in a childlike unknown. Alright, I know I am obsessed with the sound of this album, but Dan Whitford’s shaded vocals tone through tracks like, “No Defined Destination” and “Stars Last Me A Lifetime”.

If each chord and key is a shape, then Whitford’s voice is the color inside each of them. He simply fills in the songs with a subtle vibrancy that makes you feel guided through Haiku From Zero’s Cosmic Caribbean of sound. I mentioned how its beats, alone, make me happy, but Whitford’s voice and decision to play with the nuance of lyrics gives the record its romanticism. I feel like no album is full without a discussion on love, the epicenter of humanity. Yet, Cut Copy uses this epicenter with a straighter tone that gives balance to rocketing rhythms. From “Black Rainbows” to “Tied To The Weather”, even the greyest of emotions are boosted by hints of optimism and resilience. Whether they are resigning or clutching to love, the point is they are NEVER going to stop dancing with it. For More Information On Cut Copy and To Buy Haiku From Zero On September 22 Click Here.
