Album Review: Little Dragon Declare New Me, Same Us
On title, alone, I love Little Dragon’s new record because it defines what awesome relationship they have as a band, and what friendship/ love should be. You want to grow and become different, while feeling safe and assured that those who love you will still laugh and enjoy you in the same ways, even if you are a new you. Isn’t that the dream? To grow better, but be loved just, as well! Their new record, New Me, Same Us, is living the dream.
One thing that Little Dragon provide is light-heartedness. Their music feels like the embodiment of the 90’s music video for “Groove Is In The Heart.” For this group, every song is like a breathe of air to the imagination, which means with each breathe/ song, you get a new upgrade of colors swimming and swishing through your brain. Tracks like, ‘Where You Belong,” “Hold On,” and “Every Rain” breathe with deep reds and bright blues.

Sonically, Little Dragon aim for optimism, which is what groove is about; its about giving a pep to your step, and from “Another Love” to “Stay Right Here” that is what happens, They have this subtle sensual, R&B twist to tracks like, “Are You Feeling Sad” and “Another Lover.” This element comes from Yukimi Nagano’s tone and annotations. She plants her notes with a lustful dreaminess, except she is not solely trying to seduce a lover. She is trying to seduce LIFE!
