Album Review: Elley Duhé Has A Dragon Mentality

Elley Duhé’s voice is the embodiment of true finesse; textured like velvet but bare like skin. She knows how to toss notes like coins running through her fingers; keeping their worth in her touch. Yet, all this weight to her voice is backed by a soundscape that feels like a massive kingdom she’s about to tear down. Thus, her new album, Dragon Mentality could have multiple meanings.

From “Lost my Mind” to “Starz,” Elley sets the tone: a dragon mentality is the mindset of an ambitious person trying not to let their altruistic passions transform into egotism. Hence, songs such as “Counterfeit,” “Fever,” and “$$$”  lyrically discuss what it is to want material things but feel like you might lose your soul as a cost. From a man to money, you may think that you lose your soul because of others’ influences, but it is also about how you let your desires to give and gain handle how loss and rejection is a part of life. Yet, you need to have a “dragon mentality” to get what you want in life because fierce determination fires you up to burn down anything that tries to stop you, of which Elley Duhé is unstoppable. Hence, she grapples with ferocity for and fear of her own power as she tries to learn the balance between being driven or deluded.
Elley Duhé – LOST MY MIND (Audio)

I cannot gush enough about how Elley’s vocal smoke, vapes, simmers and breathes like a dragon about to inflame enemy threats. Yet, when you love something that does not love you back, it is not easy to decipher if it is a matter of “hard to get” or “time to let go.” Hence, her soundscape builds like a modern, dark fairytale, which is so the “club” scene.  Now more than ever, people accept a sense of seediness to their nightlife; dancing to tracks with heavy bases and unabashed lyrics about “getting down.” Yet, Elley is all about balance; praying for light even when dark synths are deliciously waving behind her like, in “Way Down Low.” Her ability to infuse moodiness with twinges of Hip Hop and electro R&B feels refreshing, sexy, and completely cool.
