Album Review: Little Simz Approaches A “Grey Area”

Sonically, Little Simz has been acknowledged as a melting pot of neo-soul, deep funk, and experimental pop: without neglecting her roots in hip-hop and grime. Yet, her eclectic sound is only the attractor to what people really love about her: honesty. For Little Simz, the world is a scary place to not feel good enough, and her new album, Grey Area, deals with a very real issue; how do you try to be happy in a world that makes it feel useless?

Little Simz – Offence (Official Video)

From depression to politics, Little Simz approaches all the grey areas that could leave a person settling for the lesser version of themselves. There is no denying that you will feel bad in this world about yourself, but the point of life is to learn to feel better. “Offence,””Boss,” and “ Therapy” speak to these efforts with tenacious strength. Little Simz spits rhymes as if punches can, literally, break walls. She takes her emotions and turns them into vocal forces that can break down material systems, which is the point. The reason our soul cries is because it knows its better than things, but, let’s be honest, we still want finer stuff.

Little Simz – Selfish feat. Cleo Sol (Official Video)

From “Sherbert Sunset” to “ Venom,” Little Simz is looking to feel big and be it. She is seeking to put her heart first over any “pocket” trying to dominate her moods and morals with money. This motivation speaks to so many that dream of riches while knowing, deep down, we, probably, won’t end up living like a Real Housewife on Bravo. Such a truth is not easy to hear, but, luckily, this album is a breeze. You want to go into full choreography as you hear tracks like, “Selfish,” “101FM,” and “Flowers,” but it is not just Hip Hop Dance. From modern to ballet, Little Simz has created a sound, for herself, that makes you dare to move in ways you wish your soul could.
