Album Review: Camille Delean Lyrically Dances Upon “The Grey Line”

Camille Delean’s The Grey Line might be the first album where I want to ship a record to every lyrical/ contemporary dance studio. The music seems made for every dancer who wishes they move and float through air as they pirouette to every song. With a voice that might as well be oxygen with how breathable and light it is, Delean’s The Grey Line is a display of how a quiet moment is necessary for everyone.

I admit that I can be a noise addict. I am caught off-guard by moments when silence or quiet sneaks in, and, suddenly, my mind awakens to the nooks of thought it ignores for bigger shelves of thinking. Yet, “You Need Rest”, “Daylight Soothes My Fear”, and “Leave The Fire Where It Burns” were literally made for you to be still for and in a moment. Why? Because you need to be. Meditation is for the mind what exercise is for the body. It is a moment to stretch and strengthen your thoughts, feelings, and individual voice, of which Delean does with vocal delicacy. Her voice feel like drops of rain falling from the sky, while, you the listener are the garden that absorbs its. Keys and chords are brightly fragile; like an ornate lamp lighting your path despite its ease for breakage. Candles and chandeliers always fascinate me because the gorgeous and shatterable, which are two thing Delean aims for vocally and lyrically. Each note and verse is about handling your spiritual weight while knowing that getting lighter does not mean getting less. At times, we hold on to anger, sadness, and other heavy emotions believing they are more noticeable and will grab us the attention/ strength we need. Yet, peace is a rare, welcomed gem, and tracks like,” Tomorrow I Will Leave”, “Black Sail”, and “Heron make you understand why this sentiment should never be tossed as goal; it is what the soul needs.

The subtle, sheeted magic of Camille Delean’s The Grey Line is that it is a testament to humanity’s need to sit and absorb all the beauty of itself and surroundings. Saying that may sound cheesy, and there is, definitely, a version of me giving a massive eye-roll. Yet, it is true that every human needs to take a seat, for a few seconds, and look for everything that is going right because it cannot always be about everything that goes wrong. If it is, you will end up like “Roads of Empty”; driving around to find no one, nothing, and no place that makes you feel fulfilled. Hence, meditators and lyrical dancers you have been informed; Camille Delean is ready to give you The Grey Line of mindful music on August 18. Click Here.
