Album Review: lovelytheband Are Happily Sad In “Finding It Hard To Smile”
I like lovelytheband’s debut! For being a record tilted Finding It Hard To Smile, you will certainly have one as you hear their bustling melodies. Yet, they bring up a powerful dynamic rising in pop: the melancholic bop.
“Stupid Mistakes,” “Alone Time”, “Broken,” and “Pity Party” might be the the jolliest songs on feeling quite the opposite. From Billie Eillish to Father John Misty, no matter what genre, you hear artists singing to depression while giving you dancing, detailed tracks. While they may not all sound alike, their lyrics and approach are speaking to common messages frequenting recent music: self-loathing. Throughout Finding It Hard To Smile, you will hear verses that allude to the quiet miseries and self-bullying that we ignite within ourselves to trash our being. The irony is that some of our greatest, self-hating moments happen during good times.

The gnawing feeling that you will ruin the relationship or be a forgotten blip at the “cool party” are fears Mitchy Collins confronts with his lush voice. Collins vocality feels like a bunch of silk being crunched in between your hands; something beautiful and smooth is being wrinkled by emotional touches, i.e. lyrics. His voice truly is made for the usual warmth and sweetness that defines pop, which you will feel in every rhythm. From “Coachella” to “I Like The Way,” this album grooves and sparkles like a disco-ball on a Saturday night. Their is a natural friendliness to every rhythm, which is why you get oddly, but happily duped. You may think you are coming for “feel good” beats, but you are going to receive some sentimental truths.

In many ways, keeping your words heavy but your movements light is a genius move in music and life; lovelytheband do both. Their lyrics are layered with confronting depth, but they keep a beat positive and in up-tempos to redefine that saying you are sad can be the first step to moving with joy.
