Album of 2018: LP Goes Heart To Mouth
LP’s Heart To Mouth is a heavy record that goes into the relapsing nature of depression. For all that we discuss sadness, we never really mention or delve into its repetitiveness. Behaviors are patterned, which means a consistent dive into sadness can become a character habit. Why we get sad or choose to always see the negative is what makes LP go from Heart To Mouth.
The wonder of LP’s Heart To Mouth is that it is a slow, simmering pop-rock album of self-analysis. It is a grown woman reflecting on the constant choices she makes to be dissatisfied; even when she has it “all.” Cutting off our happiness is a human epidemic, and tracks like “Recovery”, “Dreamcatcher,” and “When I’m Over You” seem to pop any bubbled ideas that age makes you “wiser” or “better.” If anything, age is a timed pressure; pushing you to see you have not achieved self-fulfillment but never, actually, pushing to do it. We cry, kick, and scream that life does not go our way, but do not figure how to make it do so or, at least, make ourselves go with life. The latter becoming LP’s mission.
Vocally, LP’s voice feels clear and harmless, which is why she can churn a power ballad so well. Your ears feel alert at the melodrama of a person that sounds clear but is singing to feeling grimy. She, sonically, knocks away notions to “judge books by their cover” by having the voice of an angel battling its inner demons. Imagine that? Being a being of light that has to combat its thoughts of darkness…… sound familiar? From “House on Fire” to “Shaken,” LP bounces around in dance rhythms but never strays from her thematic core of mindfulness. You can groove to her synths while swaying to her spirit, which is why her album is of 2018. For More Information On LP Click Here.
