Albums of 2018: Mariah Carey’s Caution Is BOLDLY FAB!
Mariah Carey’s Caution is, sincerely, one of the best albums of the year. It is a BOP FEST, and a complete emblem to NEVER underestimate an artist. So many times, people have placed Mariah Carey at an end, impasse, or need of a “comeback.” Of course, when you have a career that has spanned decades, “nay-sayers” come in droves. In an odd way, there are those that love to see a star fall to have the fleeting “pleasure” of saying, “I knew you wouldn’t last!” Perhaps, this negativity comes from a feeling the person does not deserve their success, but Caution is more proof that Mariah does.
Caution is Mariah Carey’s fifteenth album, and it is a major feat as a woman/artist in the industry. America’s culture of celebrity can be very trepidatious, and fickle in its building of legends like Mariah. Having a life so public to others’ opinion can isolate a person, but this songstress of love has consistently grown her impact and fandom by making gorgeously infectious songs. WE ALL SING ALONG TO MARIAH CAREY, and Caution is no different. “With You,” “8th Grade,” and “Portrait” beg your inner diva to become operatic. “GTFO” has, literally, become the song I play when friends have overstayed their welcome at my house party, and “Giving Me Life” makes me feel fabulous, which is Mariah Carey’s mission!
Mariah Carey has not simply dedicated her life to love songs, but also to feeling really glamorous about this virtue. There is an inherent melodrama to her sound that makes romance feel bigger and sparked of which Caution captures this effect through a sound aesthetic that feels like 90’s Hip Hop, Pop, and R&B have returned to claim the 2010’s. Her soundscape is the ripe balance of retro and modernity, which is perfect for Mariah as someone that has such a vast career. Moreover, her ability to alter the richness of her voice so as to make it appealing, fresh, and marketable, even if different from previous albums. is incredibly impressive. Hence, Caution is not simply one of the best albums of 2018 because it is really good; it is also because Mariah Carey has proven you deliver despite others’ dismissals or their desire for you to stay the “same.”
