Album Review: Luwten Opens The “Door” To Escape
Listening to Luwten’s EP, Door, I wanted to wear shades from how cool it felt. It is so subtle, effortless, and simple in its melodies. Yet, it feels complex, curious, and plotted and placed as if Luwten was trying to make statement pieces as much as songs.
I have said, before, how weird it is to be a new artist in 2020 because you run the danger of being missed. While I KNOW that post-pandemic will be a renaissance of new music and artists changing the game, we are still in the crisis and people have the tendency to want and long for the past when their present sucks. In some ways, that is the emotional crux Luwten approaches in Door; where do people go, especially in a relationship, when they don’t like how their Iife is going?

From “Don’t Be A Stranger” to “Airport,” Luwten’s songs are all about being and seeking to be transported either by a person or situation. Whether you desire your partner or want them to desire you, your want connects to the fact that their love transports you. When they are focused, present, and into your energy as you are theirs, it is hard not to feel like you went somewhere better than current earth. Add on that Luwten’s soundscapes play with elements of Lo-Fi, Industrial, and NuJazz Pop, and the record feels like a delightful descend into romantic frustration.

Vocally, Luwten is so simple it is fantastic. She is not trying to swim through her range like Michael Phelps or even cause some splashes or butterfly strokes with it. Instead, she keeps a steady, succinct tone throughout her tracks that allow the music to amplify around her like planets do the sun. This allows her to feel like the your guide and leader into the world of Door; a soundscape where couples undergo emotional therapy to see why real life crushes their romantic one.
