Album Review: Marian Hill Is Cool And “Unusual”

Snazzy, snappy, and altogether sassy, you cannot deny that Marian Hill have found the perfect marriage between jazz and pop, and, with their newest record, added a baby to the family: classic R&B. This duo was made to be the soundtrack to every lyrical choreography in the nation. Their new album, Unusual, amps their signature style with confident forwardness.

When you know what the people want, why not give it to them? Tracks like,”No Hesitation”, “Listening”, and “Wish You Would” reminded me of the early days of TLC and Aaliyah: when a smooth beat was combined with a futuristic vibe and a supple voice that melted lyrics like they were emotional ice. Samantha Gongol’s voice, from “Differently” to “Don’t Do It”, is playfully cool. If Marian Hill’s previous albums exuded their talent and genius at creating art-pop, Unusual is an a vivid display of how cool they are in their artistry.
Marian Hill – Differently

You cannot walk away from Unusual without, at least once, saying, “Damn, this album is sexy!” It is sultry through its empowerment and lyrical presentation of how rich it feels to have your own back. Songs such as, “Don’t Miss You”, “Subtle Thing”, and “All Night Long” celebrate the attractiveness of deciding what you want for yourself, and completely owning the path to achieving it. Hence, Gongol’s voice enraptures with its sophisticated, effervescent annunciations; styling verses like they are velvet and highlighting that protecting your heart only further its power. It is a strong message for a world that does not always see an open heart is a strength, but learning who to let into it is wisdom.
Marian Hill – Subtle Thing

With how deliciously funky and eclectic in production Unusual is, I cannot help but feel that Prince, himself, would have hired Jeremy Lloyd to master his future, new songs.Unusual has no problem presenting the dance-floor as a creative space; each movement of your body a painting or sculpture representing your soul. The result is an album that makes you feel brighter with each listen, and brisker with each movement. For More Information On Marian Hill And To Buy Unusual on May 11 Click Here.
