Album Review: Mala Rodriguez Gives Her Best Album Yet in MALA!
OOoooOOOOOO! I love women that make music pa perrear. The magic of Mala Rodriguez is that she makes music to twerk and think politically. She makes you want to put on your poom poom shorts to go vote, and that gift really elevates in her newest album: MALA.
Frankly, I think MALA is Mala Rodriguez’s best album yet. The beats feel like a blend of old school Hip Hop with new wave Reggaeton and Perrea culture. They infect you with rhythm to the point that you feel taken over by her songs. You can’t hear tracks like, “Mami” and “Problema,” without yelling “A BAILAR!!!!!!!!!!” Her rhythms are scintillating, and her voice feels even more rooted in a cause: to spark something within you. She was an internal fire to start in your soul that makes you both aware of society that brings oppresses us, while feeling like the only way to liberation is a good, ass shaking beat. IMAGINE! Yet, she is not wrong.

Soft power is, possibly, the most powerful form of “power.” While the U.S. has always been lauded for it “hard power” or rather its military force, it was its ability to make shows, music, films, toys, ideas, and trends spread around the world to make people dream of being HERE that made us powerful. Of course, many Americans, especially now, have seen or are revealing the countering reality to those dreams, and in an odd way MALA makes confronting ones dreams or believed lies feel scintillating and sensual. For God’s SAKE! Her cover is her naked in an empty classroom, and it fits that album perfectly: she is your history/ philosophy professor, whom also holds after class Latin Dance sessions! HA!
