Album Review: Mat Kearney Shows The CRAZYTALK of Intimacy

Mat Kearney’s CRAZYTALK is sonically seductive by highlighting the “hidden” power of intimacy. When we think of a lover’s closeness, we, immediately, think of lust. Yet, intimacy is not just sex, or, at least, its hypnotic nature comes from your mind. CRAZYTALK is about how much we think about our relationship compared to how much we manifest it.

Every lover has sworn to be more romantic, kinder, and wiser for their partner, and repeated mantras saying, “Today, I am going to be better for him or her.” Kearney sings songs like “Don’t Cry For Me”, “By Your Side”, and “Face To Face” as if they are mental odes he promises to show to a love. His voice cups tenderness as if his vocal chords were two hands holding water; it is a beautiful image considering that is what a relationship can feel like. From “Money” to “Fortress” those two hands/ lovers hold the water of their romnace; trying to keep as much from dripping away.
Mat Kearney – Kings & Queens

It is a magnificent thing the way love infiltrates our mind, and Mat Kearney takes that perspective when singing for it. While a relationship could leave us sleepless with stress, Kearney beds such anxieties into a slumber through his melodies. CRAZYTALK is by far one of his more vibrant records. He still carries his rustic, acoustic sound, but adds hints of electro R&B and soul. If before his instrumentals felt fielded in rock n’ roll grains, those fields have now been color-splashed. No longer are they green or amber in rhythms, but are pink and red instead.
Mat Kearney – Face To Face

Mat Kearney’s CRAZYTALK is explorative of both his views on love and his personal artistry. It carries a fun playfulness in its arrangements that show this artist is growing in music curiosity. After so much success as folk-rocker, you cannot deny how cool you will feel at hearing Kearney add a few twists to his sound.
