Album Review: Maybird Are “Unraveling” The Difference Between Okay And Better
You ever have a dream where you are falling? It could be from a building or on a sidewalk, but, no matter what, it is a dream that you feel real. Maybird’s Unraveling is like that dream; a mystical version of a darker sentiment. For all the sounds and looks of dreaminess, the core of such music illusion is the sense that falling/ failing at life, when you know you can and have done your best.
Maybird – Keep in Line (Audio)
Listening to Maybird’s Unraveling reminded me of two things. First, how much I love their concert, and, second, a comforting conversation I had with a woman I saw crying on the train. Nobody like publicly crying, which means she was in pain. While others averted eyes, I came up to her, and told her it would be okay because…. it always gets “okay” again, even if you do not feel it is better. Unraveling builds upon the dual desire to be okay and to be better, and trying to figure out if you could even have both, especially in a relationship. “To The Stars” is an electro-rock ride that lyrically blazes such emotional ambitions, and places Josh Netsky’s voice as a streamline of unmovable wisdom. Whether he is crashing or rising, he sings like a serene sage looking at his spiritual movements in “Grace” or to “Keep In Line”. Hence, my previous, subway tale as an example of how sometimes, we cry or feel uncomfortable by our choices, not because we made them as much as we see that we needed to make them.
Maybird – Grace (Audio)
For Maybird, we “unravel” from realizing that our best does not guarantee a win, and we must decide how to feel okay and, hopefully, better. This may sound like a harsh reality, but Netsky’s voice seems composed and even caring towards this notion like, in “Bluebird Flew Away”, which makes the audience peer into song like one would a hole in the wall; eager to see how the other side lives. Instrumentally, the album has a pop sound that graces listeners. It is fluidly evocative by not forcing emotions through sound, but tapping them like one would a switch to ignite a fountain.
