Album Review: Middle Kids Sing To The Lost Kids We All Can Be

Middle Kids’ debut, Lost Kids, is gorgeous, and plays like your radio is stitching static from every genre to send you messages from beyond. The Aussie trio warps through rock, pop, folk, and soul to, ultimately, show that INDIE, itself, is an all-powerful genre.

From anthemic to devastating, Lost Kids, is an album to the glamor, guts, and heartbreak that come with realizing there are not too many differences between being a young adult and young kid. Yet, there is one major difference; how lost you feel. I always say your inner child never leaves, but Middle Kids’ songs like, “Mistake”, “Lost Friends”, and “Bought It”, show it gets frightened and confused by how much it is “supposed” to know and achieve. Maybe, that is why most of us cherish a good brunch and a night-out, they are moments when we can be as fun and “unfigured out” as a child.

From “Don’t Be Hiding” to “Tell Me Something”, it is clear Middle Kids’ see the key to being present is letting go of needing to know your presence. They have no problem being silly or serious with their lyrics as long they are always raw and sporadic, which explains why they are also so magnetic. “Please”, “So Long, Farewell, I’m Gone”, and “Edge of Town”, give lead singer Hannah Joy the chance to show her voice can drop like a withering petal from a red rose or spike like one of its thorns. She captures both sadness and sweetness; lulling and striking her voice through choruses and harmonies that never lose intensity.

Middle Kids’ debut is a complete success. It is hard not to applaud an album so well crafted to show their talents. From fizzling guitar melodies that gurgle like citrus soda to drums and baselines that bust like waterfalls, Middle Kids’ premiere unto the music scene proves they can own and transform it however they please.
