Album Review: Mikky Ekko Shows The Rise And Pitfall of FAME
On FAME, Ekko comments, “The album is me finding my way through a labyrinth and the emotions I experienced along the way. Anyone can fake it…it’s easy to put on hats, show people one thing and mime the rest…but at the end of the day you have to look at yourself in the mirror and say this is who I am, and I wanted to give people access to who I am with this album.” This he did!
Mikky Ekko’s FAME is a tour de force from a guy that understands the double-edged sword “fame” can be. On one hand, you need fame to make your work reach more listening ears. Yet, the more people that listen also means the more whom will have an opinion.
Mikky Ekko – Cherish You
There is no doubt that Mikky Ekko can make a hit, i.e. Stay, and the critical acclaim of his debut, Time. Yet, the struggle of some of the best artists is whether you can make a hit that is honest to you. In perspective, what is truth? What does it mean to be real to/with yourself? This dilemma motivated Mikky Ekko when creating FAME because there is nothing more superficial but stunning as this energy. It is glamorous and visually enamoring, but it can be depleting and spiritually grueling. Fame is the pandora’s box of other people’s say over your voice.
Mikky Ekko – Moment
Like Fame, itself, Ekko creates rhythms that are bombastic and sophisticated; introducing you to his sound like a handshake. Yet, it is in his verses where you get to meet the actual man. For him, if a beat is an introduction, a lyric is a conversation. Thus, tracks such as, “Rest In Pieces,” “Light The Way,” and “Bitter” have Ekko singing to the cross everyone bears at wanting the world to “see you” without wanting to look at the world. In essence, it is strange at how badly every person wants to be powerful in a world that, many, do not like. From “Cherish You” to “Not The One,” Mikky Ekko is not simply looking to love someone; he is also looking to like them. He wants to LIKE life, and treasure the details of a love story more than its beginning and end.
Mikky Ekko – Not The One
Sonically, Ekko’s FAME feels like futuristic, R&B ballads; making you dance and sweeping you off your feet, all at once. His rhythms press and print over your mind like a printing press, and you stay stamped in how electric his soundscape can be while holding stories about how doused he felt. From “Moment” to “What’s It Like Now,” Ekko’s voice feels like golden flakes falling upon your palmed ears. He manages to grasp richness and delicacy; shaving emotions to their thinnest but brightest hue, of which, again, FAME can do to a person. For More Information On Mikky Ekko’s FAME Click Here.
