Album Review: Moon Taxi Heals Hearts On “Let The Record Play”

Moon Taxi have truly embodied the title of their new album, Let The Record Play, because that is ALL you want it to do. Song after song feels like music that demands to be upped in volume. The result is a record that feels unusually bright compared to other, new music.

Bahamas, Fall Out Boy, and The Shins have released exceptional records this week that ask you to swim into the murkiness of your feelings as if you can do a butterfly stroke in mud. Do not get me wrong! They are wonderful albums that pander to the darkness of alienation. In essence, they are the records you turn on when your misery needs some really good company, and you want to release your loneliness through some fiery jams. Yet, Moon Taxi’s Let The Record Play is about healing your anxieties. Sure, stress may be fun a theme to dance to, but it is not exactly something you want live by. Hence, this electro-pop record wanes and wails guitars like dolphins splashing through a sea of joy. (Isn’t that such a cute image lol!). No track every gets dour even if it gets quiet.

“No More Worry”, “Keep Me Coming”, “Good As Gold”, and “Nothing Can Keep Us Apart” are just a few songs that show you cannot keep Moon Taxi down. While this album was inspired by the current, turbulent times of our world, it provides a euphoric, hopeful response that many artists are not giving. Why? Because people do not have that much hope, and artists are people, too. While many songs aim to ignite people’s “fight” against injustice or openness to acknowledging they are sad, Moon Taxi’s goal is to reveal accepting the negative means nothing if you are unwilling to grow the positive. It is a rightful message that, when said by other people might be annoying, but Trevor Terndrup has an earth-toned voice that blossoms the value of feeling good.
Moon Taxi – Good As Gold (Lyric Video)

“Woohooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Is what I yelled as Trevor crooned tracks, “Moving To The City”, “Not Too Late”, and “The Way”. Whether keys are twinkling like church bells or violin strings/ guitar chords are rolling like they are going down a mountain, Trevor’s voice feels like the soil that plants every sonic backdrop to a sense of peace and humility. Every verse is aimed to make you feel like you are alright, and no challenge, however hard, has ever taken away your capacity to be good.
